All 10 aircrafts carrying Russian peacekeepers from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) peacekeeping forces in Kazakhstan arrived from Kazakhstan to their permanent location in the Ivanovo region, as the Russian Defence Ministry reported on Saturday.

The footage shows IL-76 military aircraft landing at the Ivanovo Severny airbase. After the Russian peacekeepers disembarked from the aircraft, they took part in the welcoming ceremony.

Earlier on Friday, peacekeepers from Armenia, Belarus and Tajikistan returned home on Russian Air Force Il-76 military transport aircraft. The Kyrgyz peacekeepers also reached their permanent deployment points.

The troops arrived in Almaty on January 6 as part of the CSTO collective peacekeeping forces to provide support after anti-government protests escalated across the country.

The unrest in Kazakhstan started after anti-government rallies began in the Mangistau region on January 2, as prices of LPG (Liquefied petroleum gas) rose from 60 to 120 tenge (€0.12 to €0.24; $0.14 to $0.28) per litre since January 1. The price hike came after the government lifted price controls on LPG, citing a need to liberalise the market.

According to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Health, over 1,300 people were injured and almost 400 hospitalised during the unrest. The official number of those detained, provided by the country’s Interior Ministry, is over 10,000.

The exact number of casualties remains unknown, although Kazakh authorities have previously said that 164 people were killed in the unrest, including 103 in Almaty, later however retracting this number due to a “technical mistake”.
