Russian President Vladimir Putin called on Gazprom to honour its contractual obligations for gas transit through Ukraine to Europe. The statement was made during a meeting with members of the government on energy issues on Wednesday in Novo-Ogaryovo.

Vladimir Putin, Russian President: “Gazprom believes that it would be more economically appropriate, more lucrative for the company, to pay a fine to Ukraine. Meanwhile, increasing the volume of gas transmission through new systems. In particular, in view of the situation that I mentioned. There is more pressure in the pipes, less CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, everything turns out cheaper, about three billion dollars (€2.6 billion) a year. Nevertheless, I ask you not to do this. We must always honour its contractual obligations for the transmission of our gas through the territory of Ukraine, through the Ukrainian gas trunklines. First, we should not place a strain on anyone, including Ukraine, despite all the issues of Russian-Ukrainian relations nowadays. Secondly, we should not undermine confidence in Gazprom as a reliable partner. I ask you, as energy minister, to take these issues under your personal control. And ensure that Gazprom honours all of its contractual obligations for the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to Europe.”
