Russia: Search, rescue operation at Siberia coalmine temporarily suspended

Search and rescue operation at the Listvyazhnaya coal mine has been temporarily suspended due to the high concentration of methane, Kemerovo Governor Sergei Tsivilev announced on Thursday.

Footage shows Russian Investigative Committee vehicles arriving and ambulances leaving the mine, while Russian Emergency Ministry’s employees set up a tent on the territory.

According to Kemerovo Governot Tsivilev, the fatal accident in the mine on Thursday killed at least 11 people and hospitalized 43, while 36 people are still missing.

According to the local investigative committee, “a number of workers” suffered from smoke poisoning. The preliminary data suggests the accident was caused by the coal dust igniting in a ventilation shaft.
