Russia’s Defence Ministry said on Wednesday that it had successfully performed a launch of its Otvet advanced anti-submarine missile in the Sea of Japan.

The missile was launched from the Pacific Fleet’s Marshal Shaposhnikov frigate, with the ministry saying that the missile successfully hit its underwater target.

“Anti-submarine missiles are launched by universal launchers that make it possible to use the Oniks and Kalibr cruise missiles,” the statement said.

The Otvet anti-submarine complex is said to consist of a guided anti-submarine missile fired from the ZS-14 universal launchers, with a maximum range of 40 kilometres. After reaching the designated area, the missile releases a self-guided anti-submarine torpedo on a parachute, which continues to search for enemy submarines with the help of its sonar station.
