Russia: World must stop Iran from achieving nuclear capability - Lapid

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Israeli colleague Yair Lapid discussed the situation in Syria, the Palestinian-Israeli settlement and bilateral issues, during a meeting in Moscow on Thursday.
During a press conference after the meeting, Lapid said the world needs to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear state, “no matter the price”, as it is “an existential threat” for Israel.
“Israel will not allow Iran to become a nuclear state or even a nuclear threshold state,” he stated. He also added that in the opposite case “Israel reserves the right to act.”
Lavrov, for his part, shared his views on resolving the situation in Idlib.
“The only way to resolve this situation in accordance with Resolution 2254 is for our Turkish colleagues to complete the implementation of those agreements that were reached between Presidents Putin and Erdogan a couple of years ago, which involve the separation of the normal, sane opposition from the terrorists, above all from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham,” he said.
Asked about the dates of the meeting of the Middle East Quartet and the possibility of a meeting during the upcoming UN General Assembly in September, Lavrov said that “it is useful to exchange views about how the international community can help to create the conditions for an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians. “
The Russian minister also stated his belief that the Biden administration is ready for this step, as is Russia.

Iran has never hidden the fact that they want to destroy Israel. That is an existential threat to us. Israel will not allow Iran to become a nuclear state or even a nuclear threshold state.”

This process has been initiated, but it is far from complete, there is still much to do, and we are constantly talking about it with our Turkish colleagues on the military side, including proposing specific ways in which we can help our Turkish partners to implement the agreements of the two presidents. The work is going on; it is, unfortunately, far from complete.”

We are interested in having such a meeting [of the Middle East Quartet] after a long break. At this stage, we are talking about a ministerial opportunity. Our special representatives in the Quartet communicated a few months ago. Everyone seemed to agree that this work could be resumed. The Biden administration is ready for it, unlike its predecessors. When this happens will depend on all the members of the Quartet. We are ready at any moment because we believe that it is useful to exchange views about how the international community can help to create the conditions for an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians, because only with them can an agreement be reached on resolving all the remaining differences.”
