According to preliminary Carbon-14 dating conducted at the Peking University, researchers consider that the age of the sacrificial pit No.4 has a 68.3-percent probability to be between 1123 BC and 1054 BC, and a 95.4-percent probability to be between 1199 BC and 1017 BC. Regarding the absence of written language discoveries, Lei Yu (leader of the Sanxingdui archaeological excavation team) and Wang Wei (director of the history department at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences) consider the possibility of words being written on objects made of organic materials, that do not survive well.
