Scuffles sparked between Israeli forces and Palestinian residents on Sunday ahead of Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s visit to the Ibrahimi mosque in Hebron to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.
A nine-branch menorah and flag of Israel were placed on the mosque, drawing widespread criticism from Palestinian residents.
Israeli forces were heavily deployed around the mosque in the West Bank. Scuffles ignited between a worshipper and a member of the Israeli troops, who has later led away from the site.
“What we read today from this visit is a message of Judaization of the Ibrahimi Mosque and the development of something undefined and clear on the part of the Israeli president of the Ibrahimi Mosque,” said Jamal Abu Aram, Director General of the Hebron Endowments.
The President’s visit was reportedly set to promote interfaith relations.
