I adopted Remy from a rescue in New York City called Second Chance Rescue, and he was all crusty and wonky. I remember calling my mom and being like, “I found my dog” and a few weeks later going and picking him up from his foster home in New York. He was actually an owner surrender. He looked like a giant scab, and he was just a heartbreaking mess. They think that he was kept in a cage for most of his life because of the way his spine was.

When I first got Remy, he was really nervous and didn’t really know how to act like a dog. The rescue told me that he was mouthy. So he was a little bit nippy when I first got him, but I had a game plan set up for it. So I would come home every day and sit on the floor of my apartment, a blanket and I wouldn’t bother him or touch him.

Sometimes I’d give him some treats and bribe him and eventually he would lay near me and eventually he would lay on me. And now we’re basically inseparable. You could tell that he really didn’t know how to be a dog because he wanted to be loved, but he was just so unsure of me.

He didn’t know how to trust me. He was like my shadow and would follow me around the apartment, but he was nervous about letting me touch him. To me, Remi is the perfect example of what a rescue dog is. They’re the forgotten souls. The broken ones who end up being the most loving and the most caring and the most loyal. There are so many dogs that need homes right now that are in shelters and rescues that are just looking for someone to give them the chance and have a little patience because it pays off every single day.

I wake up every day with Remy and he makes every single one of my days better.
