Syrian Foreign Affairs Minister Faisal Mekdad criticised sanctions imposed by Western countries on Syria as he attended a two-day summit in Serbia of the Non-Aligned Movement, which marks the 60th anniversary of the first commemorative meeting, as seen on Monday.
“There are no legal foundations for sanctions against Syria, sanctions which are killing Syrian citizens, sanctions which are not allowing the Syrian citizens to get 2 hours of electricity continuously, even in Damascus we have shortages, not to speak of other countries,” and added, “Now the Arab league is without the beating heart, so it is without a heart, and you can see the divisions within the Arab ranks.”
Delegations from over 105 countries were present in the Serbian capital, including nine international organisations and 40 Foreign Affairs ministers.
The Non-Aligned movement was established to create a third global bloc during a polarised world during the Cold War. The first meeting was held in 1961 under the leadership of Yugoslavian president Josip Tito.
