Serbia: Djokovic family and fans protest in Belgrade in support of tennis star

Family members and supporters of Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic protested in front of the National Assembly in Belgrade on Saturday against his visa cancellation in Australia.

The 34-year-old is currently being held in an immigration detention hotel pending deportation after being denied entry to Australia last Thursday due to his vaccination status.

Djokovic had arrived unvaccinated in the country to defend his Australian Open title with special permission, having been infected at least once before with COVID-19.

The Australian government has officially stated that Djokovic is not being held against his will and is allowed to leave the country whenever he wishes.

In recent days, protests against the star’s detention and visa cancellation have also taken place among the Serbian diaspora in Melbourne.

SOT, Srdjan Djokovic, Father of Novak Djokovic (Serbian): “Politicians will not decide when, whether and if he will enter their country, only a court can decide that and a court decision which will be made tomorrow around midnight according to our time zone. If the court decides that he must leave (Australia) he will leave, and if the court decides that he can stay then he will stay. The court, not politicians will decide that. Politicians should deal with politics and this has nothing to do with it. This is sport, he is the best tennis player and the best athlete in the world ever and he comes from Serbia.”

We are not angry at the people of Australia, we are angry at their politicians, at those who argue amongst each other over who is right, whether it a federal authority or a state authority where Melbourne is, or is it a Tennis Association of Australia thing and so on. One thing is for sure: he clearly wouldn’t have gone there unless they gave him permission to enter (the country) and win yet another and his tenth Grand Slam Australian Open - which is closed now, it is not open anymore now it is closed.”

SOT, Dijana Djokovic, Mother of Novak Djokovic (Serbian): “I am speaking to you as a mother, I know there are many mothers here and I know he is a child of every home in Serbia. I am aware that people do not sleep when he plays and that people do not cook meals if he plays. I would like to thank you for the great love that you have for him. This time I would like all of us to send him love, a big heart and support. He should know that we are all with him and that we pray for him to overcome this situation in which they got him in in Australia.”

We wait for them to inform us and show us how a diplomat and the best tennis player ever should be treated.”
