Hundreds of protesters and environmental activists gathered at Republic Square in Belgrade to rally against two new laws passed by the Serbian Parliament on Sunday. Activists stated it would pave the way for foreign companies to damage the environment.
The government has offered mineral resources to companies such as China’s Zijin copper and Anglo-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto, which plans to extract lithium in the west of Serbia.
Climate activists and civil society groups state that the new referendum reform would block popular initiatives against polluting projects. The expropriation law would allow the acquisition of private land by the state within eight days.
In this country, everything is based on corruption and we cannot get rid of corruption and violence. We have to stop this and we need to make a normal market for the future,” said protester Strahinja Brajuskovic.
Protesters held signs decrying government policies and waved flags of Serbia.

SOT, Strahinja Brajuskovic, Protester (Serbian): “In this country, everything is based on corruption and we cannot get rid of corruption and violence. We have to stop this and we need to make a normal market for the future.”

SOT, Ros Siljanovic, Protester (Serbian): “As a lawyer and a citizen I think we have to protest against crashing the constitution and because here we have violence against citizens and against their property because these laws are fascistic and they go against the citizens and it’s only good for the corporations.”
