Serbia: Protesters rally for lithium mining ban during Statehood Day celebrations in Belgrade

Hundreds of demonstrators blocked roads near the Palace of Serbia in Belgrade, Tuesday, to oppose lithium mining in the country, while President Aleksandar Vucic held a ceremony inside the building to celebrate Statehood Day.
Protesters were impeded by police from entering the premises of the Palace.
“We all came here with the same goal. Rio Tinto exploits jadarite in Jadar, Radjevina and other Serbian villages and they will poison our land. There will be no water, no clean air and there will be no food. This is a fight for survival. I am from Belgrade and came out every single day to support the activists who are standing in front of the presidency. All of us here share the same goal, we want to ban and expel Rio Tinto and anyone else who wants to exploit jadarite and other poisonous materials,” a protester said.

SOT, Savo Manojlovic, Protester (Serbian): “We are asking for one thing only, we want them to delay the dismissal of the parliament, they have a deadline. The government can bring a new law proposal today and in 24 hours the parliament can vote against the mining of lithium and cobalt. We want freedom for entire Serbia.”

SOT, Miroslav Jakovljevic, Gornje Nedeljice towner (Serbian): “People are very agitated, they cannot believe what is going on. We cannot believe there is going to be a mine there, but we are trying to fight and we will keep on fighting and trying to prevent it from happening.”
