One man has been injured after a gunman opened fire on protesters who were trying to tear down a statue of a 16th century Spanish conquistador in New Mexico.

Police detained several members of a local civilian militia group who called themselves the New Mexico Civil Guard.

Another statue of Juan de Oñate was removed peacefully by officials in Alcalde, a town in the same state.

Report by Jeremy Barnes.
