The calligraphy works of a six year old girl living in Xuancheng, Anhui province, have captured the online attention of thousands of fans on local online social media platform ‘Douyin’. The young star has racked up millions of likes online, many impressed with her calligraphy skills that exceed well beyond her years.
Xi Liyuan learned calligraphy from her grandfather Jia Chaoushui. Even more impressive is that she has only been learning calligraphy for little more than a year. Starting during the pandemic she was taught by her grandfather who was immediatley impressed by her natural talent at controlling a pen.
Besides online fame, Xi Liyuan has received multiple awards for her skills and has even begun to sell some of her completed works.

TRANSLATIONS:

SOT, Xu Liyuan, 6-year-old calligraphy artist (Mandarin): “I didn’t have any skills in writing calligraphy at first, and then I started to follow my grandfather’s guidance.”

SOT, Xu Liyuan, 6-year-old calligraphy artist (Mandarin): “My happiest moment is that I was in a good mood one day, and my handwriting was terrific, and then my grandfather praised me.”

SOT, Jia Chaoshui, Xu Liyuan’s grandfather (Mandarin) “It is not my wishful thinking to teach her initially, and the key is that she also wants to learn.”

SOT, Jia Chaoshui, Xu Liyuan’s grandfather (Mandarin): “Our Chinese traditional culture itself needs to be passed on by the next generation because the writing system is the country’s soul. I wanted her to grow up and learn calligraphy when she’s older, but children like to play with mobile phones in today’s internet era. She probably saw other children learning to write, which also triggered her idea of learning calligraphy.”

SOT, Jia Chaoshui, Xu Liyuan’s grandfather (Mandarin): “Xu Liyuan began to study calligraphy in May last year and has been studying for only 14 months up to now.”

SOT, Jia Chaoshui, Xu Liyuan’s grandfather (Mandarin): “She is excellent among her peers. I am so glad to see that she is very willing to learn calligraphy, which is commendable.”
