Residents and visitors in Bratislava reacted to the country’s new lockdown for those unvaccinated against COVID-19, as seen on Monday.
Customers at a local shopping mall showed COVID-19 green passes to the staff working there, in order to be allowed inside.
According to the new rules, only those who have been vaccinated against the virus, or those who have recovered from the virus in the past 6 months, will be allowed to enter non-essential shops and public gatherings.
“The situation is a bit complicated because the rules started this morning and we [got] to know about it Friday evening,” said Olga Hammer, PR manager for the shopping mall.
Olga explained that the checks are being carried out at the mall’s main entrance, whilst other entrances show signs detailing the new regulations.
“These restrictions are quite important because of [the] number of sick people in hospitals, and my opinion is that we have to do something now because the situation in hospitals is very critical,” said one local resident, adding that he hopes the situation will improve.
The country has witnessed a surge in COVID-19 cases over the past few days, with 9,584 new infections recorded on Sunday.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Visitor from California: “It’s not fun, it’s not good, but that’s life. We want to keep living.”
SOT, Resident: “I bought this sword in a shop and they had me show the little green pass thing to check if I was actually vaccinated.”
SOT, Visitor from India: “Since I have been vaccinated and everybody has this green pass., I know if I show this green pass it’ll be okay.”
SOT, Olga Hammer, PR manager of shopping complex: “Actually this situation changed from this morning on. We have to control the COVID passes of the customers but also the people which were infected and they are [recovered from] their COVID sickness, they are allowed to go inside so no [permission] to come for the people which are just tested, this is the change which is valid from this morning on.”
SOT, Olga Hammer, PR manager of shopping complex: “The situation is a bit complicated because the rules started this morning and we [got] to know about it Friday evening, and it is very complicated for shopping centres like ours, which [has] 22 entrances all together and it’s impossible in two days to get all 22 people and actually it’s not like 22, it’s from 6 o’clock in the morning until midnight and to have so many hours covered it’s unrealistic. So today we have covered just the main entrances for the physical control with security and the rest of the entrances which are not so common[ly used] and not so strong we cover with instructions that only people which are vaccinated or [recovered from] the sickness they can come. So, we really do believe that people respect the rules, that they are coming only with this respect of the situation and we have this place safe. That’s it, what we can say for right now.”
SOT, Resident: “So for me, these restrictions are quite important because of [the] number of sick people in hospitals, and my opinion is that we have to do something now because the situation in hospitals is very critical, and all staff suffer from the amount of sick people, the lack of space for them. And also I think in these hard times we should be more, we should respect each other and be very careful, and I hope the situation will be better or will get better soon. I am responsible, I wear this face mask and I try to obey all these restrictions so I hope, as I said before, the situation will get better soon, so this is my opinion.”
