Slovenia’s Basketball team returned to Ljubljana on Sunday, after ranking fourth and missing out on a medal during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Hundreds of fans gathered at the Ljubljana International Airport to welcome superstar player Luka Doncic and his teammates on Sunday, waving Slovenian flags and cheering.

“I want to thank everyone who watched (the game), I think it might be even more than half of Slovenia. So really thank you to everyone who was waking up, watching us and I really know they supported us,” said 22-year-old Doncic during a press conference.

Doncic’s stellar performance earned him a spot in the top five of the tournament’s MVPs with Kevin Durant, Patty Mills, Rudy Gobert and Ricky Rubio.

Slovenia’s men’s basketball team lost the semifinals to France, who claimed the silver medal, and to Australia who won bronze. The US beat France to win their fourth straight gold.

SOT, Luka Doncic, Slovenian basketball player (Slovenian): “Yes, what I thought is what I already said right after the third place, when we lost, that I want to thank everyone who watched (the game), I think it might be even more than half of Slovenia. So really thank you to everyone who was waking up, watching us and I really know they supported us.” *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Luka Doncic, Slovenian basketball player (Slovenian): “I don’t think it’s the same if they (fans) are not there. We felt their support everyday, but I think they already gave us this support in Lithuania, when they (fans) came all the way up to Lithuania. There were quite a few fans, they were very loud in Lithuania in a full arena. But as I said, really thank you to everyone who supported us.” *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Luka Doncic, Slovenian basketball player (Slovenian): “I would say that right after the game we were very disappointed. Because we all really wanted a medal. We wanted to take the medal, but then and also now I think we are aware that we are in the top four in the world. That doesn’t happen everyday. And these were also our first Olympic Games. I think we learnt a lot and as Matej (Matej Erjavec, President of Basketball Association of Slovenia) said earlier, we still have three years of competitions (European championship, 2023 World Championship and Olympic Games in Paris) in front of us.”
