Slovenia: European Affairs ministers urge integrated and coordinated response to future crisis

The Slovenian State Secretary at the Foreign Ministry Gasper Dovzan and European Crisis Management Commissioner Janez Lenarcic said that the EU must be integrated and coordinated in times of crises, during a press conference in Kranj on Friday, after an informal meeting of the EU Ministers for European Affairs.

Minister discussed strengthening the Union’s resilience through preparedness and secure digitalisation.

“We also agreed on the importance of digitalisation, the legislative packages which are currently under discussion are crucial for strengthening the role of the EU on the digital markets. Of course, in parallel we also have to adopt measures to strengthen cybersecurity. Yesterday in formal talks we also discussed the possibility to use artificial intelligence to strengthen resilience and strategic foresight,” said Dovzan.

Lenarcic spoke about the importance of achieving preparedness by modernising the Emergency Response Coordination centre.

“This centre is one of the most important tools that we have to face challenges, this is a centre that is functioning 24 hours a day every day of the year, and it has proven to function extremely well during the pandemic,” he said.

Lenarcic strongly stated his desire to see all six Western Balkans partners join the centre: “Natural and other disasters and crises often have cross-border effects, and this is an area surrounded by member states, so this is basically our backyard, as has already been mentioned, and their inclusion and the participation of all six partners in the European Civil Protection Mechanism is to the interest of both sides.”
