The northwestern cyclone, fed by moist air masses, continued to move across the territory of Kazakhstan. Shifting from west to east, the cyclone fell in the form of rain, which later turned into ice. A few hours later it was covered with snow in almost all regions of the republic. Weather conditions are complicated by gusty winds. Snowstorms are expected in the northern part of the country; in the rest of the country, the wind speed will reach twenty-five to thirty-five meters per second with gusts.
In the Akmola region, a record amount of snow fell by local standards. In the Zhambyl and Almaty regions, heavy icing of power lines, which led to a blackout in cities and towns of important social facilities, including hospitals, kindergartens and schools.
In the mountainous regions of the Turkestan region, the formation of slope runoff and a rise in the water level in the rivers is expected, which will lead to flooding of settlements located along the rivers. Heavy equipment is being used to clear important road junctions. During the night period, the output of equipment amounted to 598 units, including 196 gritters and 690 road workers. Over the past day, heavy equipment was involved - 549 units, road workers - 1,298 people, the Almaty akimat specified. Rescue services have been placed in a state of emergency. Flights in regions with especially difficult weather conditions are suspended until further notice. The country’s authorities say that the situation is under control, but unnecessarily asked not to leave their homes. The rescue service once again urged Almaty residents to be careful in pedestrian areas and not to leave cars near trees. Rescuers also warn that it is dangerous to be under the crowns of trees due to heavy rainfall. This can lead to injury and more serious consequences. The Department of Emergency Situations reminded of the danger of avalanches and recommended not to go to the mountains. The authorities also called on the population in remote areas to provide assistance to the elderly and people in need of outside help.
