A Japanese roadside service station’s vending machine udon soup is now available as an ice cream flavour. Customers were seen enjoying both the soup and the new ice cream in the Selion service station near Akita City on Saturday.

Locals were pleased with their helping of the traditional dish but seemed keen to try out new formats. “Udon is a food in Japan, the image of Japanese food, and they make it into ice cream or pound cake or something like that, so I really want to try it, and I want to go to buy some later,” said visitor Yukiko Yamaguchi.

Moe Ishikawa, a visitor to the ice cream vendor, described the taste. “It is different [from ordinary flavours] and tasty because it tastes salty unlike the usual sweet ones.”

The new iced treat will set punters back a reasonable 430 yen ($3.78) with toppings. The Udon soup flavour has also been added to a pound cake for noodle fans to enjoy.
