Satellites images from Durban and Pietermaritzburg disclosed on Friday showed the scale of the recent riots and looting in South Africa.

Shopping malls could be seen on fire, and debris were seen scattered around buildings.

Pictures of Pietermaritzburg took on Friday also showed long lines of people waiting to get food outside the few supermarkets that remain open.

Violent protests have spread across South Africa, following the jailing of former President Jacob Zuma last Wednesday. The death toll surpassed 110 people since the unrest started, and more than 2,200 people have been arrested following acts of violence.

Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in jail for contempt of court after refusing to appear in front of a commission investigating allegations of corruption during his presidency. His legal team is hoping to reduce his sentence at the Constitutional Court.
