Firefighters, police officers and soldiers were deployed by a ransacked shopping mall in Soweto, a township on the outskirts of Johannesburg, on Tuesday.
South Africa has seen its fifth day of consecutive violence by protesters, which started as former president Jacob Zuma was charged with crimes related to corruption last week.
In Soweto, malls and shops have been totally plundered by looters, with local business owners left devastated by the damage.
“How are we going to do it? How are we going to feed our children? How are we going to feed our families? No one knows the people responsible behind these things. Only god knows,” deplored a store owner whose business was vandalised.
Violent protests have spread across South Africa, following the jailing of former President Jacob Zuma last Wednesday. The death toll rose to 72 as of Tuesday, according to police.
Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in jail for contempt of court, after failing to attend an inquiry into corruption during his presidency. His legal team hope to reduce his sentence in the Constitutional Court.
SOT, Local: “The people, they were here for the past 25 years. Just imagine, they just come, they break in, they burn it. The whole shop, you can see, is upside down at the moment.”
SOT, Store owner: “Look here, all our shop it is finished. Ours is coming to zero.”
SOT, Store Owner: “Zero, I am telling you.”
SOT, Store owner: “How are we going to do it? How are we going to feed our children? How are we going to feed our families? No one knows the people responsible behind these things. Only god knows.”
SOT, Store owner: “And these people send the army now when everything is finished. The police just see these people breaking the shops and looting.”
