South Korea: US defence chief Austin calls for international response to "Soviet Union" on Ukraine

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin accidentally referred to Russia as ‘Soviet Union’ as he stated that response to Moscow’s actions towards Ukraine would be carried out in conjunction with the international community, during a visit to South Korea meeting his counterpart Suh Wook on Thursday.
“Whatever we will do will be done as part of an international community. The best case though we won’t see an incursion by the “Soviet Union” into Ukraine and so we would hope that Putin would be a lot more transparent and we would work to resolve issues and concerns in lower the temperature in the region,” said Austin at a news conference in Seoul.
The defence chiefs of the US and South Korea also discussed ways to deter North Korea. Austin and Wook mentioned they would update their joint wartime contingency plans for Pyongyang.
“While the Strategic Planning Guidance signed in 2010 still remains effective, but there have been changes to the threats that we face as well as changes to our military organisation, our defence reforms 2.0 as well as changes in the combined defence structure,” stated South Korean Defense Minister Wook. “In order for us to effectively develop a new plan we have agreed to deliver a new SPG to the committee and in terms of the end of war declaration, that is a political declaration so it will be difficult to say that the end of war declaration and the SPG have any specific relations to each other.”

SOT, Lloyd Austin, U.S. Defense Secretary: “In terms of potential responses, I don’t care to speculate on potential responses, I would just say that we will continue to use the best methods to use the best methods to address whatever the situation is that occurs and again whatever we will do will be done as part of an international community. The Strategic Planning Guidance is a policy guidance that is given to our military committee in order to develop our plan and it is from our policy level, guidance to the military committee. While the Strategic Planning Guidance signed in 2010 still remains effective, but there have been changes to the threats that we face as well as changes to our military organisation, our defense reforms 2.0 as well as changes in the combined defense structure. We’ve shared the recognition that there happens such changes and in order for us to effectively develop a new plan we have agreed to deliver a new SPG to the committee and in terms of the end of war declaration, that is a political declaration so it will be difficult to say that the end of war declaration and the SPG have any specific relations to each other.”

SOT, Lloyd Austin, U.S. Defense Secretary: “We also reaffirmed the importance of deepening trilateral security cooperation among the U.S., the Republic of Korea and Japan and moreover the commitment made by President Biden and President Moon to align the (unintelligible) new southern policy and America’s Indo-Pacific strategy and we agreed to explore ways to expand and enhance regional security cooperation and capacity building.”
