This is a rare moment of retaliation from South Korea to its neighbour to the North.

The firing of a surface-to-surface missile during military drills with the US came in response to Pyongyang’s latest test.

Launched on Tuesday, the rocket travelled 4,500 km, flying over Japan before crashing into the sea - far enough to hit the US Pacific territory of Guam if it took another trajectory.

Residents in the north of Japan were woken in the early hours of the morning by sirens and orders to evacuate their homes.
