Officials from the Military Emergency Unit (UME) and the Spanish Geological and Mining Institute (IGME) could be seen taking samples from the crater of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma, Thursday, to determine the level of sulphur and salts in the lava and ash flow spewed out during the eruption.

The officials walked near the cracks close to the crater of the volcano while taking temperature measurements.

Members of the Special Plan for Civil Protection and Emergency Attention due to Volcanic Risk (Pevolca) officially announced on Saturday the end of the eruption of the La Palma volcano, which had started on 19 September.

The eruption of Cumbre Vieja caused serious damage on the island of La Palma, affecting more than 3,000 homes and forcing the evacuation of thousands of inhabitants from their homes.
