Hundreds of people took part in the latest edition of more than a century-old ‘La Corda de Paterna’ celebration in Paterna near Valencia on Sunday.
Participants were seen wearing special protective gear and helmets, letting off thousands of fireworks in a secured area.
“We want this to be a turning point in this pandemic, and that it can also mean a recovery, not only economically and in terms of job creation, but also in terms of mental health. I think we all need to keep moving forward,” said Paterna Mayor Juan Antonio Sagredo.
The event was recognised as a Festival of National Tourist Interest in 2017. Last year the celebrations were cancelled due to the COVID pandemic.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Juan Antonio Sagredo, Mayor of Paterna (Spanish): “The Corda of Paterna is unique, but it is true that all the security arrangements have had to be increased, since we have had to ask all the participants for their full guidelines. Then, also antigen testing, the number of participants has been reduced by 20 percent to around 280.”
SOT, Nuria Campos, councilor for security (Spanish): “The Corda of Paterna is the safest Corda in the world, apart from that we have reinforced it, because the COVID advice was a Corda without public, so we have made four security strips.”
