Hundreds of people marched in Madrid to protest in defence of human rights in Western Sahara on Saturday, the anniversary of the Madrid Accords, which ended the Spanish presence in the territory in 1975.
Those in attendance paraded through the streets with coloured flares and Western Saharan flags, holding banners with messages such as “No to the tripartite Madrid Accords, stop human rights violations” or “we will achieve freedom.”
“We demand that human rights be respected in Western Sahara, that the UN resolutions be respected and that the Spanish community and the international community move to resolve a conflict that has gone on for half a century,” Sigmo, an attendee said.
Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, was occupied by Morocco and Mauritania in 1975, but Mauritania gave up its territorial claims in 1979 after signing a peace agreement with the Polisario Front. The armed struggle against Morocco went into a long pause in 1991, following the signing of a ceasefire with the conditions of a referendum on self-determination in the territory, which was never held.
Fighting resumed in November 2020, with both sides claiming that the other had first violated the ceasefire.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Sigmo, demonstrator (Spanish): “We come to claim our legitimate rights of existence, of survival as a people, as a nation, because the first and last responsibility is of the Spanish state that in the middle of the day abandoned us and handed us over to the occupying forces of the Alaouite Regime in Morocco.”
SOT, Sigmo, demonstrator (Spanish): “We demand that human rights be respected in Western Sahara, that the resolutions of the United Nations be respected and that the Spanish community and the international community move to resolve a conflict that has lasted long enough, that has lasted half a century.”
SOT, Demonstrator (Spanish): “Here people come to demonstrate and protest against the solution they want to give us. They want to give us, the only solution is a right to autonomy, when we reject it outright. We want a free Sahara [speaks in Arabic]”.
