Atletico de Madrid coach Diego Simeone held a press conference in Vigo on Sunday, following Atletico’s victory over Celta in the first match of La Liga’s new season.

He affirmed that although “the other day we were meeting with the referees for an hour and a half or two hours, it is very difficult yet to understand what is hand and what is not”, although he said that he continued to believe “that VAR is very good and that the referees seek to decide the best.”

Atletico de Madrid beat Celta de Vigo in Balaidos by 1-2, in a match marked by a controversial penalty from the ‘rojiblanco’ player Marcos Llorente that ended with scuffles between the players.

SOT, Diego Simeone, Atletico de Madrid coach (Spanish): “Well, a bit of everything has happened. I think we played a very good game, the first half the team controlled very well what they wanted from the game, they pressed very well on the right, on the left and came out very well on counter-attacks. We were able to create difficulties for a team that plays very well I think, that has many offensive tools, it came from the pre-season friendly games without having conceded a goal. In the second half the game was the same way, until we had a chance before the penalty. After that chance comes the penalty, which puts Celta back in the game and generates a different dynamism. The team reacted very well and found a great goal in a very good action associatively in attack. You saw the end, I cannot tell much more than what you saw.”

SOT, Diego Simeone, Atletico de Madrid coach (Spanish): “The other day we were meeting with the referees for an hour and a half, or two hours, and it is yet very difficult to understand what is considered hand and what is not, it is very difficult. I still believe that VAR is very good and that the referees seek to decide the best. About the things that you can see it is not necessary to speak.”

SOT, Diego Simeone, Atletico de Madrid coach (Spanish): “The truth is that the heat was significant. You felt it from the outside, imagine me from the inside. The dynamics and the rhythm with which the game was played were very high. It makes me very happy. The preparation has been different and in the previous game we have talked about how to face it, so that is a challenge and not a problem. We solved it in the way we wanted.”

SOT, Eduardo ‘Chacho’ Coudet, Celta de Vigo coach (Spanish): “I think the game ended up being a good one, specially in the second half, we created many more opportunities. In the first half we did have the ball, but we did not created opportunities, and in the second half we created them, but hey, it was against a team with a lot of hierarchy, who converted theirs. We couldn’t convert any of what we had. Perhaps the fairest thing might have been the draw at least, but the merits do not exist, you have to score goals.”
