Spain: "I was really surprised" - Real Madrid boss Ancelotti on Messi"s Barca departure

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti commented on footballer Lionel Messi’s departure from FC Barcelona during a press conference ahead of La Liga Santander opener against Deportivo Alaves in Alava, on Saturday.

The Italian coach referred to the decision as surprising “because Messi has always been the flag bearer of Barcelona since he was a child,” and added that, “he has always stayed at Barcelona. I have a lot of respect for Barcelona’s decision and Messi’s decision too”.

Previewing the upcoming football season, Ancelotti said, “The players are committed, they have done well, and I think we are ready to start this competition which is very important for us.”

He also referred to the future at Real Madrid of player Martin Odegaard, who will not be playing this weekend, stating that it was not a technical issue, “Odegaard is like the Vallejo issue, an issue of non-registration, it’s not a technical issue.”

This Saturday, La Liga Santander kicks off with a Messi-less FC Barcelona and Real Madrid playing at Mendizorrotza Stadium against Alaves.
