Spain: "Las Fallas" festival kicks off in Valencia after two-year COVID break

Thousands of people gathered on the streets of Valencia as the traditional festivity of ‘Las Fallas’ began on Wednesday, after a two-year halt due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The famous celebration had been postponed before, during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939).
The streets of Valencia appeared decorated with giant statues and artists preparing for shows.
“Restarting it now, even though in September, is a big joy. We are so happy and excited to be here and to have ‘Las Fallas’ back again”, said Fallera artist Silvia Batet.
Las Fallas is a Valencian celebration that commemorates Saint Joseph, traditionally from 15 to 19 March. Las Fallas is celebrated with revellers parading giant papier-mache figures, known as ‘ninots,’ through the streets before setting them alight and letting off fireworks.

SOT, Carlos Galiana, Valencia city councillor (Spanish): “From one side, we were hopeful after having lived in lockdown and having been unable to have ‘Las Fallas’ festivity all these months, but we are also careful and responsible because we are still in the pandemic and we have to avoid any health issues in Valencia.”

SOT, Carlos Galiana, Valencia city councillor (Spanish): “This festivity sector needed another street celebration, but there is another important factor, feelings and mental health. We have seen at the municipal level the mental health consequences of being in lockdown all these months.”

SOT, Eduardo Sanchez, Co-president of ‘La Merce’ Fallas celebration (Spanish): “It is really important for ‘Las Fallas’ artists, who are obviously those who are creating these marvels but besides that, there are also the dressmakers, there are goldsmiths, there are carpenters, there are innkeepers, there are hoteliers, everybody. Of course, this was a great incentive to start all over again.”

For many years that some Las Fallas had not been canceled in Valencia, since the Civil War. For all the Falleros, it has been very difficult to be able to spend these years without parties. To restart again now, even in September, is a great joy. We are very excited and happy to be here, and to have Las Fallas again.”
