Spain: Pablo Fernandez breaks World Record after swimming 36 hours straight for charitable purpose

The Spanish swimmer Pablo Fernandez, broke a new Guinness World Record on Monday by swimming uninterruptedly for 36 hours for a charitable purpose.

The athlete will donate 1,000 euros for every hour swum, more than 36,000 euros, to cover 2,000 scholarships for school supplies in the poorest neighborhoods of Madrid.

The images filmed on Monday show Fernandez swimming in an infinity pool at the facilities of Clicars, a company of which he is the founder.

The images recorded on Tuesday capture the Guinness World Record ceremony and the delivery of the donation to Father Angel of the Mensajeros de la Paz Foundation.

The businessman and sportsman have to his credit several previous Guinness World Records in swimming.

SOT, Pablo Fernandez, Swimmer (Spanish): “This challenge, I was going to do it at the Clicars facilities and we are here in Villaverde, one of the neediest neighborhoods in Madrid, and also taking advantage of the fact that we have such a good relationship with Mensajeros de la Paz and Padre Angel, it occurred to me to make a local donation, there is no need to go 10,000 kilometres away from here to help people, there is need right next door.”

SOT, Pablo Fernandez, Swimmer (Spanish): “Looking at all the possible collaborations, in the end, also with Father Angel and Nieves, we were looking at a very nice program that there is so that no child is left without school supplies, it is a program that is often difficult to finance. And we had an opportunity there, that program costs 40,000 euros to give between 1,500 and 2,000 scholarships in-school support for the next school year.”

SOT, Pablo Fernandez, Swimmer (Spanish): “Yesterday, all the circumstances were good, except at the beginning that the pool was about 20 degrees C, we made the mistake, we emptied the water, we put it to warm up, normally it takes 24 hours (to warm up), but in winter it takes 48 hours, so when I got in it was cold like…I said, wow, 36 hours here, I don’t know if I’m going to make it. In fact, the anecdote is that the whole team was finding hot water heaters all over Clicars, with basins to pour and while I was swimming they were throwing that hot water at me, it took 14 hours to raise the temperature.”
