Police officers rescued several animals from a farm in La Palma on Monday during a rescue operation following the eruption of La Palma volcano.

One of the officers carried a goat in his arms to put the animal to safety in the back of a Guardia Civil van.

The officer also moved a sheep out of an enclosure to safety away from the lava that continues to engulf the island.

The volcano had been under close surveillance for several days by local authorities due to increased seismic activity.

Evacuations began on Sunday before the eruption, about 5,000 local residents having been evacuated.

The last time the Canary Islands experienced a volcanic eruption was in 2011 on the island of El Hierro, south of La Palma, although the eruption happened underwater.
