Thousands of protesters gathered in the streets of Barcelona on Sunday to protest a proposed expansion of El Prat airport, the city’s main aviation hub.

“The increase from 50 to 80 million passengers per year that has been planned in the city of Barcelona represents an increase in emissions that will affect the climate from 30 to 50 percent in the middle of a climate emergency,” the spokesperson of anti-expansion group Zeroport, Maria Garcia, explained.

Earlier this month, the Spanish government suspended its investment into the project, accusing Barcelona authorities of not having made a “mature decision” on the investment plan.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Maria Garcia, Zeroport spokesperson (Spanish): “The increase from 50 to 80 million passengers per year that has been planned in the city of Barcelona represents an increase in emissions that will affect the climate from 30 to 50 percent in the middle of a climate emergency. It means intense tourism, and that means intensified housing expulsion. Let’s keep in mind that Barcelona is one of the most unequal cities. It means continuing with this economic model of labor exploitation: remember that the tourism sector is the most precarious, with poorly paid and temporary jobs”.

SOT, Joana Bregolat, Member of Climate Justice Network (Spanish): “We are demanding that any expansion of the airports be halted, not only in Barcelona, but also in Palma (de Mallorca) and Barajas (near Madrid). We are waiting, and hoping, that governments understand that these policies go against life, they go against the time period in which we live in. We cannot allow ourselves to continue advancing in policies that go against everything we are defending which is life”.

SOT, Joana Bregolat, Member of Climate Justice Network (Spanish): “We’re here because we are against the airport expansion, but not only the airport expansion. We’re seeing that there are climate denial policies that are going against the emergency situation that we’re living in now and that some politicians are still determined to push forward policies of destruction of territory, speculation and precariousness of people’s lives.”
