Thousands of pensioners and their supporters marched in Madrid on Saturday against the possible privatisation of pensions and demanding a rise in minimum pension payouts.

Protesters marched and chanted slogans while carrying placards and banners through the city centre.

“We demand a rise in minimum pensions, as we have said, and of course, a halt to the privatisation of the public pension system,” said Leopoldo Pelayo, a spokesperson at the General Coordination of Pensioners.

According to Pelayo, the purchasing power of pensioners in Spain has fallen by around three percent for 2022.

Spain has faced a sustained rise in annual inflation, which rose to 6.7 percent in December of 2021, according to Spain’s National Statistics Institute.
