LGBTQ organisations led a protest against homophobia in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol on Wednesday.
Participants carried signs and banners bearing slogans such as: ‘Homophobia and fascism are the same’ and demanding justice.
An uproar was caused by Bertrand Ndongo, a member of the right-wing Vox party, making an appearance at the rally and was escorted away by police.
The demonstration was originally called to condemn the latest case of discrimination against LGBTQ people in the country. A 20-year-old man, who reported an attack by a masked group who allegedly assaulted him and carved a homophobic slur in his buttocks in the Malasana district on Sunday, withdrew his testimony on Wednesday.
The interior ministry came out on the day of the protest to announce that the alleged victim took back his statement and said that the injuries were consensually caused. The Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez had previously scheduled a meeting for the country’s hate crime commission following the news of the alleged attack.
The calls for protests were not withdrawn by the organisers who explained on social media, that there are many other cases of homophobic violence that have to be fought, including the death of Samuel Luiz.
In July, Galician resident Samuel Luiz became the victim of what is suspected to be a homophobic attack in which he was beaten to death. Since then, there have been repeated protests in Spain.
