Police evicted on Tuesday part of a group of victims of a 1980s food poisoning scandal who locked themselves inside the Prado Museum in Madrid and threatened to commit suicide.

The group of six warned that they would ingest several pills they carried with them and would broadcast their suicide live if the President of the Spanish Government Pedro Sanchez did not agree to meet with them.

Adulterated rapeseed oil, dangerous for human consumption, caused serious food poisoning in Spain in 1981, with more than 25,000 affected people and around 4,800 deaths.

Those affected denounce the compensation as totally insufficient.

SOT, Luisa Alfonso, Victim of rapeseed oil poisoning (Spanish): “I am affected, I was a victim of rapeseed oil 40 years ago. I was a girl when it happened to me, I was 11 years old, and I have been suffering this all my life. We are really fed up.”

SOT, Luisa Alfonso, Victim of rapeseed oil poisoning (Spanish): “Well, we are fed up of nobody paying attention to us, we are forgotten but we are still sick people and victims of state terrorism, because in the end it was that, and we are not recognised as such, you know? All other victims have recognised rights and we don’t.”

SOT, Miguel Angel, Victim of rapeseed oil poisoning and participant in the lockdown at Prado Museum (Spanish): “I would like for my colleagues, who have been forcibly detained, to be here. The museum staff has behaved well towards us, but I suppose they had orders from whoever it was, that we had to get out of there, and if we did not leave, they would take us out, as they did.”

SOT, Miguel Angel, Victim of rapeseed oil poisoning and participant in the lockdown at Prado Museum (Spanish): “Well, we ask for a meeting with the government, with the president of the government, who is so supportive with so many other victims, but with the victims of the toxic syndrome he does not reply to our emails or our letters.”

SOT, Miguel Angel, Victim of rapeseed oil poisoning and participant in the lockdown at Prado Museum (Spanish): “I have to live with a subsidy that was approved in 1981 with the solidarity that existed in those years.”

SOT, Miguel Angel, Victim of rapeseed oil poisoning and participant in the lockdown at Prado Museum (Spanish): “Our life is to endure pain daily, not sleeping well, sleeping with medication, taking 15 or 20 pills a day… that’s our life, to plan ‘let’s go to this place’ and then not be able to go because you are not feeling well.”

SOT, Miguel Angel, Victim of rapeseed oil poisoning and participant in the lockdown at Prado Museum (Spanish): “We had pills to take, all of us, but when we had gone to do it [take the pills], they [the pills] have been collected and thrown away, and well, they try to avoid what we were going to do, I understand that.”
