Despite the pandemic, young adults celebrated the Coming of Age Day in style, as seen at the world-famous ceremony in Kitakyushu, Japan, on Sunday.
Every year, on the second Monday of January young Japanese that have turned or will turn 20 until April 1 celebrate the Coming of Age Day.
“In Japan, you can only drink alcohol after the age of 20, so I’m really looking forward to being able to drink alcohol, said Sakura, a participant in the festivities.
Ceremonies take place in convention halls and stadiums across Japan, with the most famous of the gatherings happening in the city of Kitakyushu. While in the rest of the country young adults tend to dress in traditional kimono and formal suits, in Kitakyushu they celebrate adulthood by wearing ultra-flamboyant costumes.
Some 1.2 million people across Japan reportedly celebrated adulthood at the ceremony this year.
