Star Wars fans from Yakutsk build scale model of iconic X-wing starfighter

A team of enthusiasts from Yakutsk built a scale replica of the T-65 ‘X-wing’ starfighter, used by the protagonist of the Star Wars saga Luke Skywalker in his aerial battles against the empire.

The idea to create the aircraft came from Star Wars enthusiast and cosplayer Ayaal Fedorov. Footage filmed in Yakutsk on Saturday shows the fan, together with his team, tightening screws to the side of aircraft, lifting the turbine for the aircraft’s wings, and finishing the fuselage.

The building process kicked off by calculating the scale dimensions of the spacecraft. According to another team member Ivan Afanasiev, the crew didn’t have the exact scales and parameters of the starfighter, so the measurements were calculated manually.

“According to the Star Wars encyclopaedia, it has a length of 12.5 metres. There were drafts, there were some 3D models, but those models were made by enthusiasts, fans of Star Wars. There was a similar basic layout, but they diverged in some details, so we just took one of the drawings as a basis and derived all other dimensions based on proportions,” explained Afanasiev.

Fedorov also explained that the team downloaded the pictures of the spacecraft from the Internet and made some calculations. So, consequently, the X-wing starfighter was built the same size as the original Luke Skywalker’s aircraft however the length of the fuselage was a little bit reduced.

“Our workshop was too small, so the mockup is 60-70 centimetres smaller than the original length of the spacecraft,” stated Fedorov.

The team spent about three months building the spacecraft, which took place during summer 2021.

The newly-built starfighter was put on display in the Urdel recreational park, where another team’s spacecraft, the Razor Crest had been previously on display for the public. However, Razor Crest was damaged during high winds, which destroyed the mockup of the spacecraft.

The team plans to use Luke Skywalker’s starfighter to film fan videos for Star Wars admirers.

“It would be cool if we had Razor Crest there too. All of them standing together would be nice. Well, it’s all right, we will build more,” - shared Fedorov.

SOT, Ayaal Fedorov, Cosplayer (Russian): “We spent about three months on it, we were slowly building it during the whole summer. InDriver helped us to raise funds and [INAUDIBLE] we received a 1.5 million Rubles grant ($21,000), so with this money we are outlining our ideas.”

SOT, Ayaal Fedorov, Cosplayer (Russian): “We built [a new spacecraft] as we had built Razor Crest. We downloaded the pictures from the internet and converted millimetres into centimetres. So, we got a 3-D mockup, and we did it without a computer.”

Ayaal Fedorov, Cosplayer (Russian): “Yes, it is 1:1. Our workshop was small, so the mockup is 60-70 centimetres smaller than the original length of the spacecraft.”

SOT, Ayaal Fedorov, Cosplayer (Russian): “We will be filming a fan video, so we built X-wing for this purpose. It would be cool if we had Razor Crest there too. All of them standing together would be nice. Well, it’s all right, we will build more.”

SOT, Ivan Afanasiev, Cosplayer (Russian): “This is the aircraft of the rebels, the X-wing T-65 straighter. It is the main combat aircraft of rebels, which they used to fight against the empire. This is the most combat-ready fighter. Luke Skywalker himself also used it. Luke Skywalker and his team also managed to destroy the Death Star as well.”

SOT, Ivan Afanasiev, Cosplayer (Russian): “It was Ayaal’s idea, but I think that the X-wing is considered the hallmark of Star Wars. It has the most recognisable profile, the fuselage is simply impossible to confuse with anything, with other ships from the Star Wars universe. They are connected like father and son.”

SOT, Ivan Afanasiev, Cosplayer (Russian): “At the initial stage, when [the project] was being developed, we had to decide on what scale to build it, because there are no precise measurements. There is only a given length according to the Star Wars encyclopedia, which has a length of 12.5 metres.
