A Palestinian military court in Ramallah decided to postpone a trial over the killing of outspoken Palestinian activist Nizar Banat until September 21 due to the absence of the defendants’ attorney.

Judge Issa Amro led the first session in the case which was attended by fourteen defendants involved in Banat’s arrest and his family.

“The pillars of justice were supposed to convene today, all parties would be represented, and lawyers would attend, but the lawyer’s absence today led to the postponement of the session. Starting the case in this way is not promising”, said Amjad Shehab, head of the Freedom and Dignity List for the postponed Legislative Council elections.

The outspoken critic of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Banat died after he was beaten by members of the Palestinian security forces who came to arrest him.

TRANSLATIONS:

SOT, Gandhi Al-Rabi, Lawyer for the family of Nizar Banat (Arabic): “Today the Public Prosecution is supposed to refer the file to the court, where the indictment will be read by the Public Prosecution, which arrested the accused after the investigations conducted by the investigation committee. There are 14 people, and our role as lawyers, human rights defenders and international institutions is to oversee the trial procedures, in addition to our participation as civil plaintiffs. There will be litigation procedures, and we hope that they will be quick.”

M/S Head of the Freedom and Dignity List for the Legislative Council elections, Amjad Shehab, speaking to the press (UPSOUND): “We do not know what will happen in the next session, and this is not promising.”

SOT, Amjad Shehab, Head of the Freedom and Dignity List for the annulled Legislative Council elections (Arabic): “The pillars of justice were supposed to convene today, all parties would be represented, and lawyers would attend, but the lawyer’s absence today led to the postponement of the session. Starting the case in this way is not promising. Especially since today, the indictment had to be read out to those interested in order for the court process to begin.”

SOT, Muhannad Karajeh, lawyer (Arabic): “This is a poor court and incomplete justice. This is a trial (aiming) to close the file due to European pressure on the (Palestinian) authority to end this issue because it caused great embarrassment from the European people who pay tax money and through which they support the Palestinian National Authority. This is an incomplete court. It is incomplete and those who planned and took the decision must be tried, not just those who carried out the decision.”
