The International Criminal Court’s Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan made an announcement in Khartoum on Thursday that a deal has been reached with Sudan in connection to the suspects behind the Darfur massacre and their possible trial in The Hague.
One of those suspects is former president Omar Al-Bashir who is currently imprisoned by the current transitional government. Regarding the agreement, Khan said that the main aspect is cooperation. “I made a decision and I’m glad to see it has been welcomed by many members of the transitional government, that I wish to deploy a team here in Khartoum, to be based here in Khartoum full time, because unless one is part of the people, unless one understands the undercurrents and complexities and the richness of the history and dynamics of Sudan, we cannot discharge our responsibilities to prove cases, beyond a reasonable doubt,” he stressed.
The Darfur massacre dates back to an insurgency launched in 2003 in the region when armed militias protested again Al-Bashir’s rule. Bashir’s government responded with raids, bombings, and sending in a militia known as the Janjaweed, who were at the time led by current deputy chairman of the Sovereignty Council Mohamed Hamdan Deglo. The Janjaweed were accused of mass killings and rapes, with reportedly around 300,000 people killed and 2.7 million displaced from their homes.
Bashir has been wanted by the ICC to be tried for war crimes and crimes against humanity since 2009.
