Khartoum residents shared their reactions to the failed coup attempt that was announced by the Sudanese army earlier on Tuesday.
“I reject coups in general, and we, as the people, went out and made a revolution. If we go back to coups, this means going backwards. We suffer from tight living conditions and the economy, but it is not possible to fix what was ruined during thirty years within two years, and I am against the idea of coups,” said Moath Hmedti, a local resident.
Abu Bakr, another resident of Khartoum had a different opinion: “people welcome the coup because people have been frustrated.”
“The Sudanese people believe that the situation does not work without military rule, so those who went out in the revolution and overthrew the regime wish for a coup to happen, because the government is weak,” added Bakr.
According to initial reports, the alleged plotters had tried to take over a state media building, but the government took measures to contain the situation, leading to their arrest.
Those behind the alleged putsch are accused by the government of having links to the deposed former long-term ruler of the country, Omar al-Bashir.
Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok has claimed that plotters had comprised of both military officers and civilian elements.
Al-Bashir was removed from office and placed under house arrest by the Sudanese military in 2019, after almost four months of street demonstrations calling for his resignation. A power-sharing government was installed to run the country thereafter.
SOT, Al-Shafie Al-Adib, Resident (Arabic): “Islamic organisations are often behind military coups. They are the ones who carry out and promote these attempts. We witnessed three repeated attempts in the same way. We arrested a number of the accused. There is no justice in this matter, everyone who attempts to carry out a coup must be held accountable.”
SOT, Moath Hmedti, Resident (Arabic): “I reject coups in general, and we, as the people, went out and made a revolution. If we go back to coups, this means going backwards. We suffer from difficult living conditions and the economy, but it is not possible to fix what was ruined during thirty years within two years and I am against the idea of coups.”
SOT, Muhammad Ali Muhammad, Resident (Arabic): “The coup is a bad idea, we are at the beginning of the road now, and going back to coups? A government appoints and a government goes. And a government comes, this is nonsense, people are trying to move forward.”
SOT, Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq, Resident (Arabic): “Currently all people welcome the coup because people have been frustrated. The Sudanese people believe that the situation does not work without military rule, so those who went out in the revolution and overthrew the regime want for a coup to happen, because the government is weak. I was one of the revolutionaries and I was almost about to lose my life. May God have mercy on the martyrs.”
