Sudan: PM Hamdok vows to continue dismantling "former regime" after failed coup attempt

Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok vowed in a televised speech on Tuesday to continue dismantling the ‘regime’ of former President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, following a failed coup attempt announced by the Sudanese army earlier in the day.

He stressed that the transitional government and the committee to dismantle the previous government will take measures to fortify the transition and continue to dismantle the old system, which he said still posed a threat to the transition.

Hamdok said that the coup is a manifestation of the national crisis and indicated the need to reform the military and security services.

According to initial reports, the alleged conspirators attempted to take over a government media building, but the government took measures to contain the event.

Two years ago, President Omar al-Bashir was removed from post and placed under house arrest by the Sudanese army, after nearly four months of continuous demonstrations calling for his resignation.

SOT, Abdullah Hamdouk, Sudanese Prime Minister (Arabic): “What happened was an orchestrated coup by parties inside and outside the armed forces, and it is an extension of the attempts of the remnants since the fall of the former regime to abort the civil democratic transition. The attempt was preceded by extensive preparations, represented by the lawlessness in the cities, the exploitation of the situation in the east of the country, the attempts to block national roads, the closure of ports, the disruption of oil production, and the continuous incitement against the civilian government. The coup is a manifestation of the national crisis that we referred to in the Prime Minister’s initiative “The Way Forward,” and it clearly indicates the need to reform the military and security agencies and calls for a review of partnership on the basis and a path that leads to a civil democratic transition”.

SOT, Abdullah Hamdouk, Sudanese Prime Minister (Arabic): “For the first time, there are people who were arrested while carrying out the coup that took practical steps, what calls for revealing the full facts to the Sudanese people and the world, and holding all those involved, military and civilian, accountable, transparently and in accordance with the law. The government and the committee to dismantle the June 30 regime will take immediate measures to fortify the transition and continue to dismantle the regime of the 30th of June, which still poses a risk to the transition”.
