Sudanese wrestling has been attracting thousands of fans across Sudan, even surpassing football in some Sudanese cities, as seen in Khartoum on Friday.
Originating in the Nuba mountains, the sport has become wildly popular country-wide in recent years. The Sudanese Nuba Wrestling Federation organises matches every Friday that attract hundreds of people.
The sport is governed by specific rules and guidelines, and is played on a sand arena. In order to win, the wrestler must knock down his rival and bring him down.
“The most interesting confrontation is between East Nile region and Omdurman; the player gets very excited and emotional. In case he wins, his teammates and countrymen will all be very happy,” wrestler Jumaa Ali Kardami said.
“Some people came from a long distance, like Jebel Aulia, in order to watch the wrestling because we became addicted to it just like football’, explained Abkar Adam Bakhit, head of Black Star club.
Wrestling is the medium that coherently ties together the various aspects of Nuba life. The sport is important to the Nuba for both social and religious reasons. The wrestler is called the “knight”, indicating the high and valuable status of the sport in the Nubian society.
