Switzerland: IOC suspends North Korea for missing Tokyo Games

International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach has announced the suspension of the North Korean National Olympic Committee (NOC) until the end of 2022, due to the team not attending the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, during a virtual press conference in Lausanne on Wednesday.
Bach stated that the country ‘did not fulfill their obligation,’ and were therefore suspended in line with the Olympic charter.
The suspension means that the DPRK will not be allowed to participate in the 2020 Beijing Winter Olympics, although Bach signalled that the IOC would be open to letting North Korean athletes who qualify compete as neutrals.
The DPRK will also forfeit their accrued financial support from the IOC, and athletes will not be entitled to any assistance or programmes given by the committee during the suspension process, although the executive board ‘reserves the right’ to reconsider the suspension duration.
The IOC chief also said that following the conclusion of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the IOC have made efforts to help at-risk Afghan athletes who participated in the games, with a ‘special focus’ on women and girls.
“As a result of all these efforts, all athletes who participated at the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 are outside the country,” reported Bach. “Two winter sports athletes are also outside the country and continue training, hoping to qualify for Beijing.”

With this non-participation they were violating the Olympic charter and did not fulfill their obligation, as stated in the Olympic charter, to participate in the games of the Olympiad by sending athletes. Therefore, the IOC executive board addressed this situation and decided today that the National Olympic Committee of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is suspended until the end of the year 2022.”

The accrued financial support from the IOC for the NOC that was due to be allocated to the DPRK NOC, but was withheld due to international sanctions, will be definitely forfeited, given that the NOC did not contribute to the success of the Olympic Games 2020. The NOC of the DPRK will not be entitled to benefit from any assistance or programme from the IOC during the period of suspension. Should any athlete from this NOC be qualified for the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing 2020 through the qualification process, the IOC executive board will take an appropriate decision in due course.”
