Switzerland: Russian royal jewellery set up for auction in Geneva

A collection of gems that belonged to the last dynasty of tsars, the Romanovs, will go under the hammer at a Sotheby’s auction in Geneva, as seen on Tuesday.
The jewellery set was smuggled out of Russia during the 1917 revolution after Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna handed them to a friend, British diplomat Albert Henry Stopford.
“After a very long journey via Sweden, Finland and Norway he finally reached London, where he deposited them in a bank. The Grand Duchess was one of the last Romanov to flee Russia. She finally arrived in London a few years later where she could recuperate her beautiful jewels,” explained senior specialist for jewellery at Sotheby’s Olivier Wagner.
The collection, estimated to be worth half a million dollars, included an oval brooch with a Ceylon sapphire and diamonds weighing 26.80 carats, and matching ear clips weighing 6.69 and 9.63 carats.
“These are very important jewels for their history and fascinating provenance. It belonged to the Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia. She was married to the Grand Duke Vladimir - who was the son of the tsar. They are exceptional jewels because of the way they are manufactured - the craftsmanship is incredible. Probably made from Bolin in Saint Petersburg,” Olivier Wagner added.
In addition, numerous luxury watches, several Hermes collector’s handbags and a pair of Nike trainers worn by Kobe Bryant were also displayed for auction.
