Delegates from the government, opposition, and civil society have arrived at the Palais des Nations in Geneva on Monday, for the first session of the 6th round of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, charged with drafting a new constitution for the war-torn country.

Before the meeting, the UN special envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen said at a press conference, that the Committee co-chairs had agreed to “not only prepare for constitutional reform but prepare and start drafting for constitutional reform.” Pedersen also stated that the result of his eight months of negotiations was the agreement by the parties involved on “methodology” for a sixth round.

The Syrian Constitutional Committee was formed in 2019 and tasked with producing a new constitution for Syria. It is comprising 150 men and women, with the Government, the opposition and civil society each nominating 50 people. This larger group established the 45-member small body, which consists of 15 representatives from each of the three sectors.

For the first time, committee co-chairs Ahmad Kuzbari, from the Syrian government and Hadi al-Bahra from the opposition met together with Mr Pedersen on Sunday.
