Thousands of internally displaced persons who fled their hometown of Afrin following the Turkish-led military operation ‘Olive Branch,’ rallied against Turkish presence on their land, marking the fourth anniversary of the offensive, on Thursday.

“Four years ago, Afrin was occupied with suspicious international consensus and silence, which led to the displacement of thousands of Afrin residents and led to the destruction of infrastructure, destruction of antiquities, killing, displacement and rape,” said Mustafa Sarfin, an internally displaced person from Afrin.

He added “we appeal to international organisations and the UN Security Council to intervene and carry out its humanitarian tasks to return the displaced of Afrin to their hometown.”

Operation Olive Branch was a cross-border military operation conducted by the Turkish Armed Forces and Syrian National Army (SNA) in the majority-Kurdish Afrin District of northwest Syria, against the People’s Protection Units (YPG) of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Between 395 and 510 civilians were reportedly killed during the operation.

Over 150,000 ethnic Kurds fled the Afrin region after the military operation, with the UN’s Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) warning in a report issued in June 2018 that “permitting ethnic Arabs to occupy houses of Kurds who have fled, effectively prevents the Kurds from returning to their homes and may be an attempt to change permanently the ethnic composition of the area.”

SOT, Sarfin Mustafa, IDP from Afrin (Arabic): “Four years ago, Afrin was occupied with suspicious international consensus and silence, which led to the displacement of thousands of Afrin residents and led to the destruction of infrastructure, destruction of antiquities, killing, displacement and rape, which shames the human face.”

SOT, Sarfin Mustafa, IDP from Afrin (Arabic): “In light of the international silence, international charters and organizations have come into question, why this silence? These organisations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights have become doubtful and lack credibility. We appeal to international organisations and the UN Security Council to intervene and carry out its humanitarian tasks to return the displaced of Afrin to their hometown.”

SOT, Sido Ibish, IDP from Afrin (Arabic): “On such a painful and dark day in our lives, it was a dark day for the consciences of humanity and disappointment for them, as the Turkish occupier launched all its NATO-made military weapons, including planes, precision missiles, with the mercenaries involved in the barbaric attack on Afrin, which was a safe haven for freedom and peace.”

SOT, Sido Ibish, IDP from Afrin (Arabic): “Now our people in Afrin are subject to kidnapping, killing and physical abuse, especially women. They commit daily crimes against humanity and against nature. They cut down blessed trees, cut down forests, burn and destroy them, and also stole historical monuments.”
