Khan al-Harir market and Fustaq Square in the Syrian city of Aleppo, that had been severely damaged during the country’s conflict, reopened on Sunday following several years of reconstruction.
Footage shows customers returning to the stores and local residents gathering during the “Layali Al Madinah” (City nights) celebration, which includes the opening of Khan Al Harir Market and Fustaq Square.
“We carried out the restoration work in the presence of partners from the Syrian Trust for Development, in addition to the Aga Khan Foundation for Cultural Services. The works that took place in the Khan al-Harir market are qualitative works”, said Hussam al-Halabi, an engineer in the old Aleppo district.
“The rehabilitation operations in the market took place in two phases, the stage of rehabilitating the infrastructure, and the stage of rehabilitating the construction infrastructure that was affected by terrorist acts. Of course, the market, in addition to Fustaq Square, is a link between the markets and Al-Saqatiyah market,” he added.
In turn, Muhammad Jamal Stout, one of the market’s traders, expressed his happiness after the opening of the market, saying: “(The market now) is very excellent, and much better than it was. We hope that it will return as it was before, so that customers and all people come to shop, God willing. And it will be much better. Although since 10 years, we couldn’t come to the market at all. Thank God, now the situation is very excellent.”
The Syrian government considers the reopening of Khan al-Harir an important event within the strategy of reviving Aleppo markets after years of conflict. The place had been closed since the beginning of October 2012 when the rebels took control of the old city of Aleppo.

The works that took place in the Khan al-Harir market were qualitative works. The market is distinguished by its importance, because it is the entrance to the markets, and it is the northern end of the markets of the old city of Aleppo And it is characterized by the presence of ancient khans in it. There are Khan Jaki, Khan al-Banadeqa, and Khan al-Harir. The rehabilitation operations in the market took place in two stages, the stage of rehabilitating the infrastructure, and the stage of evaluating the construction structure that was affected by terrorist acts. Of course, the market in addition to Fustaq Square is a link between the markets and Al-Saqatiyah Market.”
