Syria: Assad meets with Russian president's envoy Lavrentiev to discuss Syrian refugees' return

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met with Russian President’s Special Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentiev to discuss countries’ approach to Syrian refugees’ return, Damascus, Monday.

According to the Syrian president’s official Facebook page, Assad said during the talks that the country was constantly working to return refugees through rebuilding destroyed infrastructure and restoring security and stability in the liberated areas. Also, Damascus tries to accelerate the reconciliation process.

For his part, Lavrentiev expressed confidence that cooperation between the two countries would be fruitful and highlighted the effective actions of the Syrian government to create appropriate conditions for Syrian refugees’ return.

The Syrian-Russian joint meeting to follow up the International Conference on Return of Syrian Refugees and Displaced took place at the Conference Palace in Damascus earlier this morning.

The International Conference on the Return of Syrian Refugees was held in November 2020 and called on the international community to give the necessary support to provide accommodation for the IDPs in order to return to their normal lives, increase its contribution and support for Syria through implementing projects related to early reconstruction, including basic infrastructure such as water, electricity, schools, hospitals, health care, social services, and demining.
