Syria: Citizens return home after decision to reopen border with Jordan

Jordanian and Syrian citizens were seen crossing the border to return home as the Jordanian government reopened the Jaber-Nassib border crossing with the Republic of Syria on Wednesday.

The decision made by Jordanian Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya comes 57 days after Amman closed the terminal in the wake of military escalation in the southwestern province of Daraa.

“I am a Syrian living in Jordan, my husband is Jordanian, I came to visit my family [in Syria] and stayed for 3 months, now I am back, thank God. Praise be to God, we arrived and everything is good. The police here are very respectful and good, the situation is normal,” stated Reem Al-Mohammed.

According authorities from both regions, Monday’s decision follows after the normalisation of relations between Jordan and Syria, which came after Syrian troops recaptured several rebel-held areas in the Daraa province, near the Jordanian border, under a Russian-brokered ceasefire agreement.

Relations between the countries in the region have increased since early September, with ministers from Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt and Syria meeting to discuss wide-ranging topics, including border security, fighting terrorism and confronting narcotics smuggling.
