Syria: Hundreds protest in Tal Rifaat after Turkey signals new military campaign

Hundreds marched on the streets of the Syrian town of Tal Rifaat, in northern Aleppo Governorate, on Friday to condemn a potential Turkish military campaign on Syrian soil.
Protesters carried Syrian flags and pictures of Syrian President Bashar Assad as their marched on the streets of Tal Rifaat, as the Kurdish town could become the focal point of Turkey’s new threatened military operation.
“I’m telling Erdogan what do you want from us? What did we do? We are Kurds, peaceful people. We do not want anything from you except that we return to our homes in Afrin on our lands in our country. What does he want from us, what did we do to him? We are peaceful people who did nothing to him. We just want our lands, freedoms, our dignity, nothing else. We want to get rid of the mercenaries from our home so that we may return,” said Rojayn Maamo, a protester.
On October 11, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Ankara had ‘run out of patience’ after two Turkish officers were killed in attacks allegedly carried out by the Kurdish militant group People’s Defense Units (YPG) in Marea, which lies north of Tal Rifaat.

SOT, Rojayn Maamo, Protester (Arabic): “I hope he will leave us alone to return to our homes. What does he want from us? To displace us from our lands? They’re not his lands, they are ours, our ancestors’ and fathers.”

SOT, Khaled Towbal, Protester (Arabic): “I came to Tal Rifaat to tell the attackers and to make everyone hear that we will not accept the Turkish, Zionist, American occupation nor will we accept their unjust mercenaries. Nor will we accept the separatists advocating to separate from Syrian lands, the dearest of lands which extends from the north to the south. I will not accept any flag except this one on my Syrian Arab Republic regardless of what someone else says.”

SOT, Ali Darweesh, Protester (Arabic): “Today we are in Tal Rifaat with the neighboring villages taking a stand against the Turkish aggression on our city and our country Syria. We have ruined the Muslim Brotherhood project in the past 10 years that Erdogan led with his followers. Today, we are protesting to show the world that we are one people in Syria and that we are behind our wise leaders to free every corner of this country.”
